O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
Come to us, o God. Come rescue us!
We your people are stuck. This deadly sand will soon swallow us whole.
We are far from home, desperate and alone
Until your Son, the promised one appears.
My friends, lift up your heads! Lift up your eyes!
God has come. He fulfills His promise to save us.
O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.
Our rescuer is here.
He brings a marvelous light that pushes away all darkness.
He says with authority, “Do not fear death, I have come to destroy it!”
The whole world longs for you, o God.
By loving you above all else, humans will be united and we shall experience true peace.
You will be our just and loving King.
